About the research

The objective of this task is to identify high crash horizontal curves on Iowa primary roads using the curve database originally created for the 2001 IHRB “Systematic Identification of High Crash Locations (SICL)” project. The SICL curve database will be updated with the 2005 and 2006 crash data, and a five year crash history will be created. The history will utilize crash data assimilated during the most recent curve update, which included 2004 crash data.

High crash curves will be defined by the frequency of non-intersection, non-animal crashes from 2002 to 2006. Additionally, run-off-road crashes occurring in wet or icy conditions will be isolated. An alternate high crash curve list, emphasizing these crashes, will be created to support site selection for the Iowa DOT’s test Tyregrip application.
