About the research

Weatherview is a traveler information system serving real-time roadway weather information to the motoring public via the Internet. Most active during winter months, Weatherview offers customers access to information including roadway surface temperatures, air temperature, and bridge frost warnings. Weatherview is a front-end application accessing a geographically distributed array of 80 sensors strategically deployed throughout Iowa’s transportation network. Sensor data are polled at intervals via dial-up lines and aggregated to a central database where they are validated before being made accessible to travelers. Data are served to customers using an Internet browser accessing active web content. During the winter months, the site is prominently displayed on the home page of Iowa DOT.
